Anti-doping agencies file appeal at the CAS in Valieva case

Last year the Olympic Games Figure Skating Event was overshadowed by a doping scandal. The 15-year old Kamila Valieva tested positive on the banned substance Trimetazidine. On 14 December 2022 the RUSADA Disciplinary Anti-Doping Commission (RUSADA DADC) decided not to sanction Valieva as she bore no fault or negligence by committing the anti-doping rule violation. The anti-doping agencies RUSADA and WADA, together with ISU have filed an appeal at the CAS against the decision to not sanction Russian figure-skater Kamila Valieva for an anti-doping rule violation.

The three appellants each seek different recourse. RUSADA seeks that Valieva would be sanctioned, which sanction may be limited to a reprimand. Both the WADA and ISU seek a decision leading to a ban and disqualification of the young Valieva’s results. WADA for 4 years and ISU for for a period to be determined by the CAS, all starting on 25 December 2021. The ISU also seeks a decision on the consequences for the results of Team Event in Figure Skating at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games Beijing, as well as a determination of the final result of that event.
